About Hotel Rottnest
Quick History
Rottnest's original building served as the summer residence for the Governors of Western Australia from 1864, until Sir Gerald Strickland became the final Vice Regal tenant in 1912. The 'Governor's Cottage' was then converted to holiday accommodation as the island opened for tourism in 1917, with the formation of the Rottnest Island Board of Control.
In 1953 the building was converted into the Rottnest Hotel, and until 2000 the hotel was operated privately, with a succession of licensees. The hotel lease then returned to the Rottnest Island Authority and was officially renamed the 'Quokka Arms' by then Minister for Tourism, Mr Bob Kucera, on October 2nd 2004.
In November 2007 Garrett Hospitality undertook a new lease for the Quokka Arms, beginning the task of restoring this landmark hotel, creating a venue worthy of Western Australia's favourite island getaway. After 2 years of restoration work the original 'Governor's Cottage' has joined the bars, alfresco courtyard, and guest accommodation in this transformation.
